128915 - NWEP Phase 3 & 5 GRIP 5-8
The North West Electrification programme was one of the key portfolios of work to transform transport in the North of England. Its aims were simply to support the introduction onto the rail network of modern, faster, more reliable and more environmentally sustainable passenger trains. The increased acceleration and higher speeds of modern electric units is key in revolutionising rail transport through reduced journey times between key cities in the North, bringing communities closer together and providing a vital catalyst to growing the regional economy.
Transpennine Route Upgrade - TRUe GRIP 3-8
Part of the ‘Great North Rail Project’, Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a Government project being developed by the rail industry led by Network Rail, to enhance the railway between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.
Proposed to enable more reliable, faster and more frequent rail travel between the north’s city regions, provide more capacity for growing numbers of rail passengers and freight, and to achieve this in a way that enables lower railway operating costs as well as fewer harmful emissions. This would support improved access to jobs and enable better business to business interaction.
